Battle of the Beers: Profit Wins Over Politics

July 30, 2006

Match point, Molson: , our political non-profit beer, has sadly been placed on hold. We’ve been strongarmed out of the market by our much richer and more bloodthirsty megacorporate competitors. As way of illustrating the lopsided nature of supposedly free-market capitalism, carefully study this graph:

Total assets (CAN$)
überbrü: $15,000
MolsonCoors: $14,000,000,000

You could call that million-to-one ratio an uphill battle. Or an über-ass-kicking-in-waiting, depending on your perspective.

Nonetheless, we’ve had a successful couple of months gaining the attention of the media. We hope that after the recent articles in the Globe and Mail, UTNE, Adbusters and THIS Magazine, among others, and a feature spot on CBC’s Make Some Noise, that people are beginning to think about the larger implications of their brewsky.

Perhaps an indicator of some cultural staying power, the beer has even managed to pop up in and flickr. It provides encouragement, and hopefully one day we’ll be back in a financial position where battle of the beers round two can begin.

In the meanwhile, we’ll be focusing on our two main projects, Art Threat, a political art blog, and Cinema Politica, an international network of free political film screenings.
